Program Overview

The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in English program is designed in accordance with the HEC Graduate Education Policy 2023 to provide advanced knowledge and research skills in English literature and linguistics. The program will build critical understanding of theoretical frameworks, scholarly inquiry, and interdisciplinary approaches across both domains. Through core and specialization courses, students will be engaged with complex texts, language structures, and cultural discourses, preparing them for independent research. The program will culminate in a research thesis, enabling students to contribute original insights to their chosen field. Graduates with MPhil English will be equipped for academic, professional, and cultural roles requiring advanced analytical and communication skills. Standard Nomenclature The standard nomenclature for all NQF level 7 qualifications in the field of English must only be specialization oriented with name depicting area of specialization such as the following: 1. “Master of Studies in English Linguistics”

Admission Criteria

  1. Academic Qualification
    • Applicants must hold 16 years of education (a 4-year BS or conventional MA/MSc in English, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a closely related field) from an HEC-recognized institution.
    • A minimum CGPA of 2.00/4.00 (semester system) or 45% marks (annual system) is required.
  2. Related Disciplines & Bridging Courses
    • Applicants from related fields such as Literature, Education, or Communication Studies may apply if they demonstrate foundational knowledge of linguistics.
    • Such candidates may be required to complete 6–9 credit hours of deficiency courses, as recommended by the Departmental Research Committee (DRC).
  3. Foreign Degree Holders
    • Candidates with foreign qualifications must provide an equivalence certificate from HEC, Pakistan.
    • Transcripts without GPA/percentage must be accompanied by certified grading equivalence.
  4. Course Load & Work Status
    • Full-time students may enroll in up to 12 credit hours per semester.
    • Employed applicants must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer and may take a maximum of 6 credit hours per semester.

Admission Process

  1. Admission Announcement
    • Admissions are offered twice a year (Fall and Spring) through the university website, social media, and print media.
  2. Application Submission
    • Candidates must submit the prescribed application form along with:
      • Verified academic transcripts and certificates
      • Copy of CNIC/B-form
      • Recent passport-size photographs
      • Statement of Purpose (optional but recommended)
      • Proof of qualifying admission test (if already taken)
  1. Admission Test
    • All applicants must secure at least 50% marks in one of the following:
      • University-conducted Admission Test
      • HEC-recognized GRE (General)/HAT (General)
    • Test validity: maximum of two years.
    • Test composition:
      • 50% subject-specific content (Linguistics)
      • 50% research methodology and analytical reasoning
  1. Merit Evaluation & Interview
    • Candidates are shortlisted on the basis of the following merit criteria (100 marks total):
      • Academic record: 50 marks
      • Admission test: 30 marks
      • Interview: 20 marks, assessed on:
        • Subject knowledge (4 marks)
        • Research aptitude (4 marks)
        • Communication skills (4 marks)
        • Personality and confidence (4 marks)
        • General knowledge (4 marks)
      • The DRC conducts interviews and forwards the merit list to the Dean for final approval.
  1. Offer of Admission
    • Provisional admission is offered to successful candidates.
    • Admission is confirmed upon:
      • Submission of pending documents
      • Payment of tuition and registration fees within the deadline
  1. Registration & Enrollment
    • After confirmation, students are issued a university registration number by the Registrar.
    • Copies of admission records are maintained in both the Registrar’s Office and the Department.
  2. Additional Policies
    • Freezing of the first semester is not permitted under normal circumstances.
    • Any exceptions (e.g., delayed submission, change in status) require Dean’s approval and proper documentation.

Degree Completion Requirements

General Course and Degree Requirements

The courses listed as core are mandatory for all MS students, regardless of their area of specialization. Departments may offer any advanced-level course in English as an elective, depending on their available academic, faculty, and infrastructural resources. The balance between theory and any practical, laboratory, or field components must align with the specific nature of each course.

Note:

*** These courses are mandatory across all qualifications from NQF Levels 4 to 8, as per HEC notification No. 10-01/2022/Coord(Acad)/HEC/235 dated March 28, 2025.
**** The research thesis must be undertaken independently by each student, in compliance with the university’s approved policies and the HEC Graduate Education Policy (2023).

Degree Award Requirements

To qualify for the award of the MS degree, students must fulfill the following minimum requirements:

  1. a) Coursework Completion: A total of 26 credit hours of coursework is required, which must include:
  • 6 credit hours of core (mandatory) courses
  • 18 credit hours of elective courses in the area of specialization
  • 2 credit hours for mandatory Quranic courses
  1. b) Thesis Requirement: In addition to the coursework, students must complete a 6-credit hour research thesis individually. Substitution of the thesis with additional coursework is not permitted.
  2. c) Minimum CGPA: A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 out of 4.00 is required at the time of graduation. However, the university reserves the right to enforce a higher CGPA threshold.
  3. d) Program Duration:
  • Minimum: 3 regular semesters
  • Maximum: 8 regular semesters
  • Note: The summer semester is not considered a regular semester for the purposes of duration calculation.
