Admission Criteria

To be eligible for admission to the PhD in English Linguistics program, a candidate must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Academic Qualification:
    • The applicant must possess an MS/MPhil degree or equivalent (18 years of education) in English Linguistics or a closely related discipline from an HEC-recognized university.
    • A minimum CGPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 in the semester system or 60% marks in the annual system is mandatory.
  • Candidates with Lower CGPA (2.5–2.99):
    • May be considered for admission subject to the approval of the Faculty Research Advisory Committee (FRAC), provided they:
      • Complete 9–12 credit hours of bridging or remedial coursework at the PhD level.
      • Secure a minimum CGPA of 3.0 in these courses to be formally admitted into the PhD research phase.
  • Interdisciplinary and Intra-disciplinary Applicants:
    • Applicants from related fields (e.g., Education, Media Studies, Applied Linguistics) may apply but must:
      • Pass a departmental subject test or GRE Subject-type exam with at least 50% marks.
      • Complete deficiency courses as recommended by FRAC (typically 6–9 credit hours) before registering for core PhD coursework.
  • Foreign Degree Holders:
    • Must present an HEC equivalence certificate.
    • If the transcript does not mention CGPA, a certificate from the awarding institution verifying equivalent performance is required.
  • Workload Limitations:
    • A full-time PhD scholar may register for a maximum of 9 credit hours per semester.
    • Candidates employed full-time in any public or private organization must provide a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and can register for a maximum of 6 credit hours per semester.

Admission Process

  • Call for Applications:
    • The university advertises PhD admissions through print, electronic, and official online channels.
  • Application Submission Requirements:
    • Completed application form
    • Academic transcripts and certificates (verified copies)
    • Statement of Purpose
    • Two academic recommendation letters or referee contact information
    • CNIC/B-Form and recent photographs
    • Proof of passing an HEC-approved Admission Test (GRE/GAT/HAT/University Test)
  • Preliminary Scrutiny:
    • Applications are reviewed by the Departmental Admission Committee to verify academic credentials and eligibility.
  • Admission Test:
    • Candidates must pass one of the following:
      • GAT (General) by NTS
      • HAT by HEC
      • GRE (International or Local)
      • University’s own Admission Test
    • Minimum qualifying score: 60%
    • The test must have been passed within the last 2 years.
  • Evaluation Criteria:
    • Academic record: 60 marks
    • Research publications (HEC-recognized journals): 2 marks per publication (max 10 marks)
    • Relevant teaching/research experience: 1 mark per year (max 5 marks)
    • Interview performance: 25 marks (minimum 50% required to qualify)
  • Interview and Statement of Purpose:
    • Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview conducted by the Departmental Research Advisory Committee.
    • The Statement of Purpose must clearly outline the candidate’s intended area of research, objectives, relevance to the field, and potential societal or academic contributions.
  • Final Selection:
    • The Departmental Committee prepares the merit list based on cumulative score (academic + test + interview).
    • The list is submitted to the Faculty Research Advisory Committee (FRAC) for review and then to the Board of Advanced Studies and Research (BASR) for final approval.
  • Provisional Admission:
    • Candidates are granted provisional admission subject to the completion of required coursework, passing the Comprehensive Examination, and formal approval of their Research Proposal by BASR.
  • Documentation and Fee Compliance:
    • Candidates must submit all required documents and pay fees within the stipulated deadlines.
    • Non-compliance may lead to cancellation of admission.
  • Freezing Policy:
    • Scholars are not allowed to freeze their first semester under normal circumstances.
